On Tuesday morning, An explosion in old Delhi’s Naya Bazar left one person dead and at least five others injured. The man killed in the explosion was carrying a bag containing explosive material. News agency ANI reported, The explosion took place very close to a mosque in Chandni Chowk area. The man has arrived in Delhi on Monday night and is believed to be a native of West Bengal. He was reportedly smoking when the blast occurred.
PTI reported that the commissioner was instructed to arrest those involved in the incident and take all measures to ensure peace in the city. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, sought report from Delhi police on the incident. He also spoke to Police Commissioner Alok Verma and took stock of the situation.
With houses and shops on either side of narrow lanes, Naya Bazar is a highly congested area. Delhi Police’s anti-terror wing and personnel from its special cell along with crime and forensic teams reached the site of the blast to pick up samples. Rescue efforts were carried out to assist those affected by the blast.
Smoke fills the street and people can be seen scurrying to safety. The man is later seen placing the bundle down thereby setting off the explosion. CCTV footage of the incident showed a man carrying a bundle of explosive material and walking through a narrow street in Naya Bazar.
Forensic teams and officers from the Special Cell are on the spot and collecting samples. The area is known for Diwali shoppers looking for firecrackers. This incident has heightened the state of alertness across the national capital region. Delhi Police personnel have been maintaining a tight vigil in view of the festive season.
