Kamal Nath sworn in as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh Congress President Kamal Nath was sworn-in on Monday, December 17, as the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh.

Governor Anandiben Patel administered the oath of office and secrecy at a ceremony held at Jamboree Maidan, Madhya Pradesh.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi, along with Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh and Mallikarjun Kharge and other opposition leaders including Farooq Abdullah, Sharad Yadav and Andhra Pradesh CM & TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu were present at the oath ceremony of Kamal Nath as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister.

Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot, Deputy CM Sachin Pilot and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu also attended the swearing-in. Former CM of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan was also present.

Kamal Nath is a veteran politician and when named the Congress chief in Madhya Pradesh, many in the party recalled that former prime minister Indira Gandhi described him as her “third son” who helped her take on the Morarji Desai-led regime in 1979.

Congress leaders claim that Indira Gandhi herself affectionately mentioned many times that she had three sons – Rajeev Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi and Kamal Nath.

As a leader of the Indian National Congress he has served as the Minister of Urban Development. He is one of the longest serving and most senior members of the Lok Sabha. He has been elected nine times from the Chhindwara Lok Sabha constituency of Madhya Pradesh

Born in Kanpur in 1946 in a business family, Nath went to the famous Doon School which later brought him proximity to the Gandhi family. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980.
