Jammu & Kashmir Violence || New Delhi || ThePoliticalIndia: After the violence during the By-poll of the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat left 8 people dead, A war of words broke out between the Election Commission and Home Ministry.
The atmosphere was not conducive for the polls, MHA had suggested the EC, but its advice was ignored.
“It is not bound to consult the central government before holding any election,” The EC hit back.
On Sunday only seven percent voted in by poll, Official said, the lowest in the state in three decades. 8 people were died in firing by security as people tried to attack polling stations.
“There is no prior consultation with it regarding the by-poll in Anantnag and Srinagar constituencies,” Home ministry had sent a letter to the commission.
“The polling should be delayed and held after panchayat election,” Home Ministry advised.
An EC source said, “MHA is only responsible for providing central paramilitary forces. The state government was consulted on the subject as it is responsible for issues.”
The source pointed out, “ECI is responsible for the assessment of the situation for holding elections.”
“The MHA wanted to postpone the Assembly Election,” The EC sources said in the case of Manipur.
The EC yesterday deferred the election in the Anantnag parliamentary constituency till may 25.
